Movie Title : Rehearsal - Independent and low-budget but something comes across....

I saw this movie at a local filmmaker's showcase screening in Oakland a few years ago. While it is very low-budget (the director was at the screening and said they had around $10,000), it is also a thoughtful character study that shines a bit of light on the humanity vs. fame debate, and has tense moments and a few good performances (and a few, well, not-so). The writing is fresh, and if you can handle the low-budget, this one may make you think a little... Why do we make celebrities out of people that do horrible things? And do those people know that before they do those things?

Looking closeley at Rehearsal

Hopefully no one rents this expecting a b-horror movie. It simply isn't a horror movie and was never meant to be that. "Rehearsal" is more than anything a mystery with some social commentary that focuses on characters who lose touch with their humanity - who find the need for some sort of immortality through fame at any cost; more valuable than life itself, and will sacrifice others to get what they feel they need. The characters are making a b-horror movie in the story, so there is a horror backdrop to it. It was shot on miniDV and suffered slightly from the constraints of a miniscule $10,000 budget. The producers and director wore many hats and dedicated a huge amount of time, passion and energy to telling the story; and I feel many good things come across in the final cut.
Anyone interested in the story can read the script before they rent or buy at the production company website. -Nathan Logan Hanley

Give this one a shot.
The first time I watched this film, I was quite disappointed with many aspects of it, music, plot, pacing, acting, etc. However, I did watch it twice again yesterday in order that I might provide a more balanced review, after corresponding with the one of the film's directors. Having given it this second look, I must still say there were many aspects of the film that I found wanting. First was the music, especially the intro music, which was repetitive to the point of being painfully annoying (God bless fast forward). I think the film would have benefited from a better soundtrack, and more inclusion of that background music throughout. Second, I still found the acting lacking, though to varying degrees. So as not to point out specific actors (and thus possibly hinder their future acting work should a producer or director read this review in considering him or her for a part) I will just write that several of the actors were obviously gifted with the acting gene, while others were not...
