This is a story that needs telling. Many have died because Taser didn't release test results in 2006 that clearly showed a relationship between chest hits with a Taser and myocardial infarction (heart attack). Instead the product was marketed as a benign alternative to deadly force when in fact in many cases it proved to be deadly force. Great documentary.

One company is responsible for this revolution: TASER International. The company s mission statement: Protect Truth. Protect Life.

In 1993, brothers Rick and Tom Smith started what would become TASER International in their parents garage. Both just in their early twenties, they were shaken by the shooting deaths of two of their friends and imagined a world without guns. By 1999, after years of trial and error and facing bankruptcy, the Smith brothers claimed to have finally found the right combination of safety and power. While TASERs were too expensive for mass civilian adoption, law enforcement officers clamored for them. Almost immediately, TASERs began to change the way officers did their jobs and in less than five years, the Smith brothers went from flirting with bankruptcy to running a multi-million dollar company.

But controversy erupted over the safety and impact of the weapons, as by 2008 more than 300 people had died as a result of TASERs and their effectiveness was found to cause officers to use them with less and less restraint. Why Doesn't Taser International Want You To See This Film?

As noted by other reviewers, apparently all the negative reviews from the film are coming from Taser International employees. The film is at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, was positively reviewed by The New York Times, LA Times, Village Voice, etc. and was in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival. My question is "Why doesn't Taser International doesn't want you to see this film?" Please watch the film and answer that question for yourself.

No story telling in this film. It's message clearly is from facts, police video, court testimony and the manufacturer, itself.
I'm an avid Documentary Film fan, and respectfully take in everything I've ever watched with as much information, from all sides, as possible. It's not unheard of, to create interest, for whatever reason, using film as a media. Documentary film is not immune to this, and it disgusts me to think that someone, or some group, would spend the time, effort, and money, to produce and market inaccurate, or misleading information, in such a way as to push whatever agenda the producers deem necessary.

This is not the case, as far as my 54 year old educated and aware eyes can see. Killing Them Safely is not a narrative documentary, it's made up of almost entirely the words, film, and corporate talking heads of the very ones that created and market and profit from this device. The scenes are court testimony, police and other agency body/dash camera footage, and the men that invented the TASER, itself. There's no re-creation of occurrences, no opinions, virtually zero frames exist in...
